The Department of Paediatrics deals with the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents, and the age limit usually ranges from birth up to 18. A medical practitioner who specialises in this area is known as a paediatrician. The word paediatrics and its cognates means “healer of children”.

Neonatology is a subspecialty of paediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, or premature newborn infants with low birth weight, intra-uterine growth retardation, congenital malformations (birth defects), sepsis, pulmonary hyperplasia or birth asphyxias. It is a hospital-based specialty, and is usually practiced in NICUs (Neonatal Intensive Care Units).
